Sebastian Bonilla is an Associate Professor of Materials and a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Universidad de los Andes, Colombia, in 2008. He later interned for the CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, 2008, and for Asylum Research, 2009. He completed an MPhil degree in Micro and Nanotechnology at the University of Cambridge, UK in 2010. He was a lecturer in Electronics at Universidad de los Andes in 2010-2011. He was then awarded a Clarendon Scholarship to read for a Doctorate in Materials at Oxford, finishing in 2015. He subsequently joined the Department of Materials at Oxford holding an EPSRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. In 2019 he was awarded the Royal Academy fellowship to start his own research group. Under his leadership, he has now developed and positioned the Interface and Electronic Materials Laboratory at the forefront of the solar energy research field, hosting over 10 researchers and tackling a variety of topics in photovoltaics and electronic materials science. He is an early career scientist and academic focussing on the electronic properties of solar energy materials, photovoltaic devices, solid state physics, and nanoscale optoelectronic characterisation. He has a broad expertise in applied physics and materials science, experience in the conception, management, and delivery of large-scale scientific projects, and a track-record of novel and industrially applicable research. He is keenly passionate for education, climate action, and sustainability.
