Obioma Okonkwo is a trained lawyer that specializes in the protection and promotion of human rights in the digital space, with expertise in policy advocacy, research, strategic litigation, and capacity-building.
Formerly served as the Head of Legal at Media Rights Agenda, a non-governmental organization based in Nigeria whose focus is on the promotion and protection of access to information, freedom of expression, media freedom and digital rights, till 2024. While serving in this role, Obioma has led groundbreaking public interest litigations, including the case that successfully challenged Twitter (Now “”X””) suspension in Nigeria and the arbitrary imposition of fines on Media outlets by the National Broadcasting Commission of Nigeria; and trained journalists, civil society organizations on these issues.
Before joining MRA, Obioma has worked with law firms and have leverage her expertise to advocate and undertake comprehensive research initiatives around the issues she is passionate about. She is currently serving on the Advisory Board of Digital Democracy Initiative, an initiative supported by the European Union and Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with the Norwegian Government to foster the resilience of civil society organizations in the global majority.
Currently, Obioma is pursuing her Master of Law in Privacy Law and Cybersecurity at the University of Southern California.
In recognition of her works, Obioma have been recipients of several international and regional fellowships such as the Open Internet for Democracy Leadership program; African School on Internet Governance; and Deutsche Welle Akademie Media Viability Ambassador.
She holds a Diploma in Law and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria. Additionally, she obtained a summer school certificate from the Hertie School on strategic litigation.
