Dr Giuseppe Spatafora is Research Analyst at the EU Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), the European Union’s internal think tank. His portfolio covers transatlantic relations, especially the relationship between the EU and the United States, as well as NATO and Latin America. His work entails, on the one hand, carrying out policy-relevant research on the security aspects of the transatlantic relationship, and on the other providing strategic policy advice to various stakeholders within the European Union, including EU member states, European External Action Service (EEAS), and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the European Commission (HRVP). Giuseppe’s goal is to prepare European countries and institutions to strengthen deterrence and deal with the security challenges facing the continent.

Before joining the EUISS, Giuseppe worked at NATO’s Policy Planning Unit. He provided policy advice to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on strategic issues such as support to Ukraine, strengthening transatlantic ties, strategic foresight and emerging threats. His work has been instrumental in setting up several NATO policies.

Giuseppe obtained his PhD (DPhil) in International Relations at the University of Oxford with a dissertation on external support and foreign intervention. He has an MPhil from Oxford and a BA from John Cabot University in Rome. He is an alumnus of the Bridging the Gap Project and of the Cornell workshop on military operations and strategy (SWAMOS).
