Dr. Crystal Grant is a Senior Fellow at the Council on Strategic Risks’ Janne E. Nolan Center on Strategic Weapons, where she examines how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies influence biosecurity. Prior to joining CSR, she served as a Technologist in Residence at the Federal Trade Commission. In this role, she guided investigations and enforcement to curb unfair and deceptive actions by AI companies, highlighting security and privacy concerns. Previously, Crystal was a Technology Fellow at the American Civil Liberties Union, where she supported litigators and policymakers on topics around genetic privacy, surveillance, and algorithmic bias in clinical care. Prior to that, she was a TechCongress Fellow serving in Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s office addressing issues in federal pandemic response and preparedness, scientific integrity, and health equity. Crystal also was a Mirzayan Fellow at The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, working with the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine to promote policies to diversify the STEM workforce. Dr. Grant holds a Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology from Emory University, where she used machine learning to model human health and aging. Through her participation in the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, she spent a year of her PhD conducting dissertation research in the Netherlands. She holds a B.A. in Biological Sciences with a minor in Anthropology from Cornell University.
