Evan A. Laksmana is Senior Research Fellow at the Centre on Asia and Globalisation of the National University of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. His research focuses on military change, civil-military relations and regional security in the Indo-Pacific. He was previously Senior Researcher at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Indonesia and the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. He has held research and visiting appointments with the National Bureau of Asian Research, the University of Sydney, the Lowy Institute for International Policy, German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. He has taught at or given lectures to the Indonesian Defense University, Australian Defence College, Australian National Security College, Indonesia Air Force Staff and Command School, and others.

His research has appeared in peer-reviewed outlets including Journal of Contemporary Asia, Asian Security, Asian Politics & Policy, Defence Studies, Defense & Security Analysis, Asia Policy, Contemporary Southeast Asia, Journal of the Indian Ocean Region, and others. His essays have appeared in Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, New York Times, Washington Post, World Politics Review, and others. He has written for RAND, International Institute for Strategic Studies, Brookings Institution, Royal United Services Institute, Asia Society Policy Institute, Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, and others. He has consulted for the UNODC Global Maritime Programme and other international institutions and government agencies. His research has been supported by, among others, the Smith Richardson Foundation, Hoover Institute, Moynihan Institute for Global Affairs.

He earned his PhD in political science from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs as a Fulbright Presidential Scholar. He also holds a MSc in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University and BA (Cum Laude) in Political Science from Parahyangan Catholic University. He received additional training in social science methodology, security cooperation, and defense analysis from Columbia University (SWAMOS), University of Michigan (ICPSR), Syracuse University (IQMR), and U.S. Department of Defense (APCSS).
